Photos and cameras and lenses, oh my

Hi everyone!

How's life?

I have a question for you peeps.

I'm doing some research on buying a new lens for my camera. I have a basic Canon Rebel XSi and looking into expanding my arsenal a bit. I'm really concentrating on portrait and (due to my necessarily detailed product photography) quite a few closeups, but don't want to invest a huge deal at this point.

I've heard great things of the Canon EF 50mm f1.8 II Lens, especially for portraits. Generally this one seems to respond pretty well to what I'm looking for at this point. (Let's not forget that the price leaves something for the shoe budget too...) Have you tried it? Is it as good as everyone says?
